WHAT IS THE MONARCH ULTRA PROJECT? The Monarch Ultra is a running, conservation and documentary project to raise awareness for monarch butterflies, a species at risk of extinction. Launched in 2018, the Monarch Ultra has triggered conservation action across communities through their ultra marathons and outreach events, with a goal of increasing conservation awareness in North America. Since the fall of 2023, the Monarch Ultra has been organizing a series of exciting running events in conjunction with Monarch Festivals across Canada, the USA, and Mexico. These events bring together passionate runners, nature enthusiasts, and festival-goers, all united in celebrating the beauty of the monarch butterfly migration while promoting environmental awareness and community connection. WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF THE MONARCH ULTRA?
To raise awareness of the decline of monarchs butterflies and all pollinators. Each running event will be part of a community-led festival with opportunities for education and environmental action at the local level, including learning about pollinator-friendly gardens and joining environmental groups.
To connect with communities and organizations along the migratory route as a way of amplifying our message of biodiversity conservation and pollinator protection.
To raise funds for the monarch butterfly sanctuary in Mexico. 100% of donations raised will purchase trees so that community members can plant cedar, pine, and fir trees in the forest sanctuaries.
